Virtual Summer Courses: ‘Deutschland online erleben’ – information for teachers

This virtual programme replaced the German Pupil Courses and German Scholarships Programme  in 2021 due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Applications for summer courses are expected to open in January 2022, and updates on how the courses will be run in 2022 will be published here soon.

General information about the courses

The programme is run by the Pädagogischer Austauschdienst (PAD) and UK-German Connection.

The Virtual Summer Courses: ‘Deutschland online erleben’ gives pupils the chance to put their German skills into practice and immerse themselves in the language with like-minded peers from many different European countries. It’s a unique opportunity to exchange on topics relevant to their lives, gain new perspectives, make friends, all under the guidance of specialist German teachers.

This is an international programme and participants will experience German language learning in mixed international groups.

This programme is for UK pupils who

  • are aged 15-17 when the courses take place
  • are in the penultimate year of school or below
  • have been learning German for at least two years (or one year if the pupil is in year 10 (England, Wales) / year 11 (Northern Ireland) / S3 (Scotland))
  • are permanent UK residents

Applicants should have achieved excellent results in German and need to have a high level of interest in the language and culture, good general knowledge, as well as excellent personal, social and intercultural skills. The ability and confidence to speak and interact in German in a virtual setting is of particular importance. Courses will be offered at two levels according to competency in German. Teachers will be asked to comment on the applicant’s level of German in a teacher reference.

Participation for successful candidates is free. Selected participants need to commit to actively taking part in the course every day as well as the wider programme run by UK-German Connection. In order to apply, candidates must complete an application form as well as submitting a reference from a teacher.

You can find more information about the programme on our website for young people.

This programme is run by the Pädagogischer Austauschdienst (PAD), Bonn, on behalf of the Auswärtiges Amt (German Foreign Ministry). In the UK, the programme is managed by UK-German Connection working in close cooperation with PAD.  The Pädagogischer Austauschdienst is the German governmental institution in charge of international education at school level and works to develop and promote international co-operation at school level.
