Jack and his mother live in a small house in the countryside. They are very poor.

„Jack, I’m hungry. Make me some tea and toast“, says Jack’s mother.

„Sorry, mother, but we don’t have any tea or any toast.“ says Jack.

„You stupid boy! I’m hungry. Go to the market and sell something so we can buy some food.“ she says.

„Sorry mother, but we don’t have anything to sell!“ says Jack.

„Don’t be stupid!?“ says Jack’s mother. „Sell the table. Sell the chairs! Sell anything! I’m hungry!“

Jack thinks for a moment and says: „We could sell Maggie, the cow. But I don’t think it’s a good idea. She gives good milk every day.“

But Jack’s mother doesn’t listen.

„I’m hungry!“ she says. „Take the cow to the market tomorrow and make sure you get £10 for her“.

The next morning, Jack is going to the market when he meets a farmer.

„Good morning,“ says the farmer.

„Hello,“ says Jack.

„Are you going to the market?“

„Yes,“ says Jack. „I’m going to sell this cow.“

„What good luck!“ says the farmer. „I want to buy a cow.“

„Great“ says Jack. „Is £10 OK?“

„Wait!“ says the farmer, taking some beans from his pocket. „Look at these.“

„Are they beans?“ asks Jack.

„Yes.“ says the farmer, „they are the best beans in the world! They are magic beans. Plant them tonight and tomorrow they will grow, up to the sky!“

„Hmmm. Really?“ says Jack.

„Yes. It’s true“, says the farmer with a smile.

„OK. It’s a deal!“ says Jack.

Jack’s mother is not happy.

„Jack, you are so stupid. That bad farmer tricked you!“ she says.

And she tells him to go to bed early.

Jack goes to bed. But his mother is angry and she throws the magic beans out of the window, into the garden.

When Jack wakes up the next morning, it is dark outside. He gets out of bed. He runs to the window. The sun is shining. But he sees a big beanstalk. It is very tall, taller than the tallest tree!

„I wonder what’s at the top“, he thinks.

So Jack climbs up the beanstalk. It is a long climb to the top. When he looks down, his mother’s house looks very small.

At last he gets to the top and he sees a beautiful country.

The grass is green and the sun is shining. In the distance he sees a big castle.

Jack walks to the castle. He does not know it, but a giant lives in the castle. The giant’s wife opens the door. She is over 6 metres tall.

„Excuse me“, says Jack, „I am very hungry. Can I have some food?“

The giant’s wife is very kind.

„Yes little man, come into my kitchen. Have some breakfast with me. But eat quickly. Because if my husband sees you here, he will have you for breakfast.“

„Really? Is that true? Will he eat me?“ asks Jack.

„Yes“, says the giant’s wife, „he likes to eat little men like you.“

Jack is very frightened. But he is also very hungry. So he goes into the kitchen.

The giant’s wife makes breakfast. But then Jack hears a noise.

„Oh no! It’s my husband!“ says the giant’s wife.

„Quickly, you must hide!“

And she hides Jack in her kettle. (It is a giant kitchen, so they have a very big kettle).

The giant shouts:

„Fee, fi, fo, fum,

I smell the blood of an Englishman

Be he alive, or be he dead,

I’ll grind his bones to make my bread!“

„Don’t be silly husband,“ says the giant’s wife. „There are no Englishmen here. Please come and have your breakfast.“

„There is an Englishman here! I can smell him. Where is he? I’ll eat him for breakfast, with my toast.“

„No“, sais his wife „you are wrong! And I can’t smell anything.“

So the giant has some eggs with his toast instead.
