Café Connect for school and youth partnerships

Do you have a partner school or youth group in Germany? Would you like to connect with them in a safe and informal virtual space?

Adapted from our classic ‘Café Connect‘, for individual young people, we are now offering this virtual exchange café to partner schools and youth groups as a chance to meet up online in a friendly atmosphere and take part in fun, interactive activities, and group discussions on current topics.

  • How does it work?

We’ll set up and host the online get-together for you and your partners at a time to suit you. The café works well as a late afternoon club (of up to 90 minutes), with the young people taking part from their own devices at home.

We can facilitate as much or as little as you wish during the session and can offer a mixture of interactive group activities, including games and quizzes, group discussions and the opportunity to chat in smaller breakout groups.

Topics could include (amongst others) music & film, the environment, school life, social media, identity & culture… let the young people decide!

  • Who can take part?

Café Connect works for different age-groups and is open to primary and secondary schools (including SEN), FE colleges and youth groups with a partner institution in Germany.

  • How can schools get involved?

Send an email to partnerships@ukgermanconnection.org with the following information:

    • your name
    • the name of your institution
    • the name of your partner institution in Germany
    • dates and times that would suit you and your partners
    • any topics the young people are interested in
    • the number of young people you would like to take part (from each country)

We’ll then contact you to discuss further details and put a plan together to suit you.

After that, we’ll send you our Digital Safeguarding document and ask you to send us a list of the participating young people, as well as a confirmation of parental consent (see ‘online safety’ below for further details).

We will then confirm your participation and share the access details for joining the call.

  • What equipment do we need to take part?

The online meetings will be hosted using a video conferencing website. Only confirmed participants will be admitted to join the call.

Each participating young person will need to have or borrow a laptop, tablet or smart phone with a camera and microphone and stable internet connection. We also strongly recommend headphones.

Each participant should attend using their own, individual device unless there is a compelling reason for several participants to use one device. In this case, please contact us in advance. This is for safeguarding as well as technical reasons.

If you have any other barriers to young people taking part, please get in touch to speak to us about this on partnerships@ukgermanconnection.org.

  • Online safety

Our online events take place in a protected and moderated environment and are led by experienced and vetted UK-German Connection staff, including a dedicated online-safety contact.

Only confirmed participants will be admitted to join the call. Online safety briefings will be given at the beginning of each event, including guidance on how to privately ask for help or support. The meetings will not be recorded, and contact details of participants will not be shared without prior written permission.

In advance of joining the meet-up, participants (and their parents, if under-18) must read our Digital Safeguarding document, which includes the following information:

    • our code of conduct for expected online behaviour during the webinar
    • technical safety features for our webinars, and how to share any concerns with staff during the meeting

After receiving the Digital Safeguarding document, each partner coordinator should send us an email confirming that all participants have read it and will adhere to it.

If you have any further questions, please don’t hesitate to get in touch: partnerships@ukgermanconnection.org
