Lauren’s trip to Bavaria on the German Pupil Courses in 2019 taught her it’s OK to make mistakes and can actually help you learn. She shares her insights…

Name: Lauren

Age: 16

Town/city: Belfast, Northern Ireland

UK-German Connection activity: German Pupil Course, Ortenburg, Bavaria

What is your favourite memory from the 2 weeks in Germany?

My favourite memory would actually have to be when we were in class and we all got to bond for the first time. A close second would have to be our free time spent in Regensburg though.

Did you stay in touch with your your partner and the other participants?

Yes, I have stayed in touch with most UK participants; I regularly meet with a friend from Northern Ireland. I also talk with my host partner from time to time about what we have been doing in life.

What are you doing now and what are your plans for the future?

Right now I am heading into A levels which is scary because of the pandemic but I chose German as my first A level and hope to continue it into university along with French.

It wasn’t a question whether I would take German at A-level but going on the trip solidified my choice to study it at university.

What was the most important thing you learned during the course?

Most important thing I learnt is that if you aren’t sure about a particular word or sentence structure; just say it and if you are wrong, it helps you learn after you are told your mistake. In class I became a lot more confident, even if my answer was wrong I would not become discouraged.

The course showed me to value connections with people who share the same interests as you as they can always help you.
