It’s Berlin-ing to look a lot like Christmas!

Giving young people a voice was the aim of our biggest ever youth conference in Berlin in December 2018!

We brought together 100 young alumni aged 16-25 from across all of our programmes – German Pupil Courses, German Scholarships, Ambassadors and Youth Seminars – as well as new participants to celebrate past involvement and look ahead at UK-German Connection’s journey.

The young people took part in a number of workshops over the weekend reflecting on their past UK-German Connection experiences and discussing ideas for the future, as well as creating new friendships and exploring the German capital of Berlin.

I became aware of the importance of promoting cultural and linguistic interaction between young people of different nationalities.

We asked the young people: What are you interested in? What has your UK-German journey been? How can we further develop UK-German youth relations? The participants advised on a variety of topics, activities and areas of interest for young people and planned activities which will be taken forward by UK-German Connection.

Sharing my views really made me feel heard, being given a space and a platform to use my voice.

As part of the weekend the young people explored the German capital. They took part in a walking tour of Berlin to take in the key sights such as the Brandenburg Gate, Holocaust Memorial and Bebelplatz. The group also spent time at a Christmas market to get into the festive spirit!

Acting on our Shared Future

We also invited 16 new participants from across the UK and Germany to take part in drama workshops under the title ‘Acting on our Shared Future’. Find out about these workshops and what they got up to here.

What happened next?

The young people left the conference feeling inspired to continue their UK-German connections, and hopeful for the future of youth relations between both countries! We’re looking forward to working with our Alumni again soon.
